ABSTRACT

A working memory capacity (WMC) test called “objects-span tri-tasks” is designed for preschoolers undergoing treatment using a new genre of multimedia, tangible multimedia, created by the authors. It tests the dual-functions of the preschoolers’ working memory (WM), namely storage and manipulation capacity, essential in supporting academic skills. The third task in the test is the overt setting of task engaging the long-term memory that supports the operation of WM. Tangible multimedia potentially enhances the WMC of preschoolers to a considerable extent because firstly, it uses tangible objects that are cognitively appropriate to the “preoperational” stage of preschoolers, and secondly, it simultaneously stimulates three main sensory channels, prescribed as equally crucial in knowledge acquisition in human memory theories. A pragmatic significance of the research is that it deepens the scope of multimedia research by looking into the aspect of cognitive structure which is rarely conducted in the multimedia realm. It also demonstrates an important step forward in multimedia research by relating WMC to the newly explored tangible multimedia, which could determine the real capability and value of such system. This paper starts off by discussing the underlying theories that contribute to the formation of the system and test, followed by its procedure, and a brief report of a case study.

AN EXPLORATION OF THE CONCEPT OF TRANSMEDIA STORYTELLING IN THE UNITED STATES AND SOUTH KOREA: A SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS

Author : Young-Sung Kwon* and Daniel H Byun†

Volume, Issue, Month, Year :
 Vol 8  , No 6 , December, 2016

ABSTRACT

This research study sought to investigate how the concept of transmedia storytelling had been studied in both the United States and South Korea. The general objective of this research was to discover whether researches in the United States and South Korea studied the concept of transmedia storytelling differently and whether researchers in both the United States and South Korea have focused on different aspects of transmedia storytelling. Qualitative methods were used in the study. A systematic review was used as a method of data collection and analysis. The results of the study have revealed that the difference between studies that have been done in the United States and South Korea on the concept of transmedia storytelling have discernible differences. The only slight differences are with respect to the use of mobile technology and the scope and nature of the channels through which transmedia is experienced.

LOW POWER SI CLASS E POWER AMPLIFIER AND RF SWITCH FOR HEALTH CARE

Author :  Wei Cai1 , Jian Xu,2 and Liang Huang3

Volume, Issue, Month, Year : Vol.4, No.4, December 2016

ABSTRACT

This research was to design a 2.4 GHz class E Power Amplifier (PA) for health care, with 0.18um Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation CMOS technology by using Cadence software. And also RF switch was designed at cadence software with power Jazz 180nm SOI process. The ultimate goal for such application is to reach high performance and low cost, and between high performance and low power consumption design. This paper introduces the design of a 2.4GHz class E power amplifier and RF switch design. PA consists of cascade stage with negative capacitance. This power amplifier can transmit 16dBm output power to a 50Ω load. The performance of the power amplifier and switch meet the specification requirements of the desired.

Reusable HEVC Design in 3D-HEVC

Author : Young Su Heo, Gun Bang, and Gwang Hoon Park
Volume, Issue, Month, Year : Volume 38, Number 5, October, 2016

Abstract

This paper proposes a reusable design for the merging process used in three-dimensional High Efficiency Video Coding (3D-HEVC), which can significantly reduce the implementation complexity by eliminating duplicated module redundancies. The majority of inter-prediction coding tools used in 3D-HEVC are utilized through a merge mode, whose extended merging process is based on built-in integration to completely wrap around the HEVC merging process. Consequently, the implementation complexity is unavoidably very high. To facilitate easy market implementation, the design of a legacy codec should be reused in an extended codec if possible. The proposed 3D-HEVC merging process is divided into the base merging process of reusing HEVC modules and reprocessing process of refining the existing processes that have been newly introduced or modified for 3D-HEVC. To create a reusable design, the causal and mutual dependencies between the newly added modules for 3D-HEVC and the reused HEVC modules are eliminated, and the ineffective methods are simplified. In an application of the proposed reusable design, the duplicated reimplementation of HEVC modules, which account for 50.7% of the 3D-HEVC merging process, can be eliminated while maintaining the same coding efficiency. The proposed method has been adopted as a normative coding tool in the 3D-HEVC international standard.
